About NDA

Description

The National Defense Academy or NDA examination is conducted twice a year by the Union Civil Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit young and dynamic candidates into the Indian Armed Forces such as the Navy, Air Force and Army. Here, cadets from the three arms of the Army, Navy and Air Force study together and then move on to their respective military academies for further training. The NDA site is located in Khadakwasla, Maharashtra.

How To Apply For NDA Examination

CDS written exam notifications are sent in November and July. UPSC conducts exams in the months of February and October. Students can only apply for CDS and OTA written exams online at UPSC website.

Eligibility For CDS Written Examination

Education: Minimum educational level is class 12 under school education form 10 2 or equivalent in the NDA wing. For Air Force Naval Academy, Navy and NDA, applicants must pass the 12th examination under Form 10 2 of Physical Education and Mathematics administered by the state or university board of education.
Age: Applicants must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years old.
Gender: Only male candidates can appear for the NDA exam.

Exam Pattern of NDA Examination

The NDA exam is conducted in two phases: a written test and an interview with SSB. UPSC conducts test recruitment for NDA while SSB conducts a series of interviews hence called SSB Interviews.
  • Written exam in two parts
  • Mathematics and General Aptitude Test. The total duration of the article is 5 hours.
  • The GAT is divided into two parts: Part A is an English paper and Part B is a general knowledge paper.
  • NDA Written Test with a total score of 900 i.e. 300 in Maths and 600 in GAT. SSB interview is also conducted in two stages and carries 900 marks.
  • The first phase includes the Officer Intelligence Rating Test (OIR) and the Picture Perception and Description Test (PPandDT).
  • Phase II includes interviews, group test leader responsibilities, psychometric testing, and conference. These tests are carried out over a period of days.

Syllabus

NDA or National Defence Academy is a national institute for training selected young men for officer level entry into the Armed forces of India. NDA is located at Khadakwasla near Pune, Maharashtra. It is a training facility for the leaders of tomorrow who will be respected and followed. It is not just an institution but a way of life. NDA transforms a hesitant young cadet into an honourable, physically and mentally competent and polished man who is prepared for any kind of adversity that might face him; an officer and a gentleman.

The training at NDA is rigorous. In addition to service training for the army, navy and air force, the cadets are also taught academics to cover the graduation level degree in Arts, Sciences or Computers. The training at NDA is broken into six terms and the total duration of training is three years. Once their training is concluded, the cadets are awarded their bachelor’s degree at the passing out parade of NDA. Thereafter the cadets go to their respective service institutes i.e. the Indian Military Academy or IMA for army cadets, Air Force Academy Hyderabad for Air force cadets and Naval Academy Cochin for Naval Cadets.

Requirements

  • The minimum education qualification is 12th pass under 10+2 pattern of school education or equivalent for Army Wing of NDA
  • For the Air Force; Navy and Naval Academy of NDA; candidates must pass 12th pass under the 10+2 pattern of school education with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University
  • Candidates must be of the age group 16.5 years to 19.5 years
  • Only Male candidates are allowed to apply for NDA exams.
